Hot Shop Hot Nights with Firebird Community Arts

Artists Lynquell “LA” Biggs and Deaunata Holman of Chicago-based Firebird Community Arts are our March visiting artists!
From March 13th to 17th, LA and Deaunata will be in residence at Hilltop Artists, offering their expertise, sharing their experiences as part of Firebird Community Arts and the Project FIRE program, and collaborating with our students.
The week culminates on Friday, when we welcome our community to see LA, Deaunata, and our young artists in action. At Hot Shop Hot Nights expect to see a professional glass artist working with and mentoring our advanced production students and alumni, creating spectacular collaborative pieces. The Gallery is open for shopping, and light refreshments will be available.

Firebird Community Arts offers highly personalized ceramics and glassblowing instruction from their warehouse-turned-art studio located in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood. They serve those who have been impacted by structural or individual trauma, including violently-injured youth, veterans, formerly-incarcerated individuals, undocumented and immigrant populations and Chicago Public School students on the South and West sides.
Firebird Community Arts helps people heal primarily by teaching glassblowing and ceramics – media that are typically expensive and difficult to access, but by their very nature elicit healing and build community. They provide a safe space, linkages to relevant wrap-around services, and professional and educational pathways for under-represented communities in the arts.
Project FIRE, Firebird’s signature program, is a glassblowing and trauma recovery program for youth injured by gun violence in Chicago. In addition to healing through glassblowing, Project FIRE is an employment and mentoring program that provides trauma informed support groups, case management, and medical treatment. The program is in partnership with Healing Hurt People-Chicago, a hospital based violence intervention program that provides case management support to participants.

If you use the address 803 N Grant Ave, Tacoma, WA 98403, the directions should lead you to the basketball court entrance at the back of the school campus. You may enter the Hilltop Artists’ hot shop through the door just past the two big garage doors.
