Live on Facebook, December 18, 11 AM
Emerging artist Doug Burgess is a member of the Hilltop Artists alumni team. This new program invites advanced students 18+ and alumni to return to our hot shops and work in small pods on advanced production projects. The artists earn an hourly stipend as well as a half hour of free studio time for every hour worked.
As part of the alumni program, we will spotlight these artists on our social media platforms, sharing their process, work, and perspective.
We’re so excited that Doug will be our first artist features in the Hilltop Artist Spotlight!
Tune in to our Facebook page on December 18th at 11 AM to meet Doug and to see what he’s working on in the Jason Lee Hot Shop.
Doug Burgess (Haida, Dakota, and Umpqua) is a Tacoma-based glass artist and Hilltop Artists alum who has been working in glass for eleven years, starting as a seventh grader at Jason Lee Middle School.
Artist Statement:
A lot of the inspiration for my work comes from my mother. My mom Nancy pushed me to explore the medium of glass at a very young age. At the time, I thought it was cool to work with hot glass and fire but it was also very intimidating and uncomfortable so I didn’t imagine myself continuing and progressing in it. However, at this point my life practically evolves around glass.
For the past three years I’ve been fortunate enough to work with glass full time, becoming more comfortable and confident working with the material. All though being focused on craftsmanship is great, it has caused me to put the artistic side of things on the back burner.
Luckily, getting the opportunity to attend institutions like Pilchuck Glass School and Corning Museum of Glass has given me a chance to slow down, think about what I want to convey with my work, and just talk through ideas with some of the most profound, renowned, and talented artists in the world.
